The Platinum 3776 Century is Platinum's attempt to make the ideal fountain pen. The name comes from Mount Fuji — 3,776 metres, Japan's highest peak — and the reference is deliberate: this is the pen Platinum designed to represent the pinnacle of their craft. First introduced in 1978 and continuously refined since, it has earned a reputation as one of the finest everyday fountain pens at any price point, distinguished above all by its extraordinary Slip and Seal cap mechanism.
The Slip and Seal cap
Most fountain pen caps provide a reasonable seal against nib drying — enough to keep the pen ready for hours or a day. The Platinum Slip and Seal cap provides something different. A spring-loaded inner cone forms an airtight seal around the nib when the cap is posted, preventing ink evaporation so effectively that Platinum's testing shows pens retaining 40% moisture after two years unused.
In practice, this means the 3776 Century is uniquely suited to occasional use. You can leave it inked for months, pick it up, and have it write immediately without priming. For writers who maintain several pens, or who use a fountain pen only for specific tasks rather than daily, this property is genuinely transformative.
The nib range
The 3776 Century is available in a wider range of nib sizes than almost any other production pen — extra extra fine, extra fine, fine, medium, broad, soft fine, soft medium, and music nibs. The specialty nibs are worth particular attention:
Ultra Extra Fine (UEF): Extremely fine — the finest production nib from any major manufacturer. For writers with very small handwriting or anyone who needs maximum precision on small-format paper.
Soft Fine (SF) and Soft Medium (SM): Standard sizes with a built-in softness — a slight flex that gives the nib springiness and responsive character without true flex line variation. An excellent first gold-nib experience for writers accustomed to stiff steel nibs.
Music (M): Two slits, three tines, very high ink flow. A broad, wet, expressive writing experience. Not for everyday note-taking — for letters, journaling, and any writing where bold character is the priority.
Gold nibs: what to expect
The 3776 Century uses 14k gold nibs in all sizes. Gold is softer than steel and slightly springier, which gives the pen a responsive, cushioned writing feel. Platinum's gold nibs also have slight tactile feedback — a pencil-like quality that some writers find more engaging than the frictionless glide of some gold nibs from other manufacturers.
The jump from steel to gold in this pen is noticeable. Writers who've used steel-nibbed pens at lower price points often find the 3776 Century a revelation — not because it writes differently in theory, but because the feel under the hand is distinctly more alive.
Colour range
The 3776 Century is available in a wide range of body colours — solid and demonstrator (transparent) versions. The solid colours include Chartres Blue, Bourgogne (a deep burgundy), Laurel Green, Citrus, and the classic Black Diamond. The demonstrator versions show the ink through the transparent barrel and cap, which is both aesthetically pleasing and practically useful for monitoring ink level.
3776 Century vs Pilot Custom 74
The two dominant first-gold-nib recommendations among Japanese fountain pens. Both are roughly comparable in price and performance. The Custom 74 has the CON-70 converter with its extraordinary 1.1ml capacity; the 3776 Century has the Slip and Seal cap for unmatched shelf life. The Custom 74's nib tends to feel slightly smoother and more glassy; the 3776's nib tends to feel slightly more tactile and springy. Both are outstanding. The choice often comes down to whether ink capacity or longevity between uses matters more.
Filling the 3776 Century
The 3776 Century uses Platinum's proprietary cartridge system and converter. The standard converter is a piston type providing good capacity. For those who want maximum ink capacity, the 3776 Century is also compatible with the Platinum Balance eyedropper body in some variants. As with all Platinum pens, only Platinum cartridges and converters are compatible.
