Description

This Hobonichi Techo cover was created in collaboration with Arts&Science, the shop and brand led by Sonya Park, who also oversees the English-language edition of the Hobonichi Techo, the Hobonichi Techo Planner.

This year's leather is Wax Coating Kip, a vegetable-tanned kip leather finished with dye. The wax is worked into the surface by hand by craftspeople, drawing out a rich sheen while preserving the natural character of the leather.

The colour is a deep, rich dark brown. The interplay of wax and dye creates distinctive variations in tone and a beautiful lustre. The more you use it, the deeper the colour becomes and the more the shine develops.

This is a techo cover you can nurture over time into something uniquely your own.

The design is kept simple — no metal fittings, just a belt that loops through. Even if your techo grows thicker from adding cards or stickers, you can adjust the belt to keep it shut.

The edges of the leather are left undyed, so the natural kip colour shows through as a design accent. On the back, Arts&Science's signature key motif is stamped into the leather.

It has a pen hook designed to hold a pen by its clip. On the inside, the logos "ARTS&SCIENCE" and "HOBONICHI" are blind-embossed into the leather.

The Hobonichi Techo leather covers are made with all-natural materials that have their own unique appearance. Every leather cover is a one-of-a-kind, all-natural product, so you can feel good knowing your cover is the only one like it in the world. Expect markings that naturally occur during an animal's life, such as wrinkles, veins, texture and scratches, as well as characteristics from the manufacturing process of natural leather, such as dark spots that occur when components of the leather are exposed to iron in the air during tanning and dyeing.

Arts&Science is a select shop and brand for which Sonya Park serves as creative director and owner. Founded in 2003, the brand currently operates 15 locations across Tokyo, Kamakura, Kyoto, and Fukuoka under various concepts.

The shops carry a wide variety of items such as original clothing, home goods designed to make your time at home more fulfilling, everyday items, artist collections, and even in the field of food. Exhibitions and special events are held on an ongoing basis, alongside collaborations with brands and artists.

Precision in the Details

  • Leather that answers to you: The hand-worked wax leaves a surface that feels smooth and faintly waxen under your thumb, and the deep cocoa-brown darkens and gains lustre the longer you carry it. No two covers age the same way.
  • Nothing to snag or rattle: There are no metal fittings at all, just a belt that loops through, which you loosen as your techo thickens with cards and stickers.
  • Details you notice slowly: The cut edges are left undyed so the pale kip shows through, the key motif is stamped into the back, and both logos sit blind-embossed inside where only you will find them.
