Description

The Hibi 10 Minutes Aroma sense. series takes an unusually literal view of what a fragrance is for. Three scents, three hours of the day: Sea for the morning, River for the middle of it, Forest for the point at which the day quietly gives up. Each box holds eight incense matches and a small heat-resistant mat, and the whole arrangement is slim enough to vanish into a coat pocket.

You strike it against the box as you would a match, let the flame catch the incense, then blow it out and lay the stick on the mat. The box is thinner than a deck of cards and weighs next to nothing in the hand. Ten minutes later the stick has gone; the scent stays another half hour without being asked. There is something quietly disciplined about an incense that decides for itself when it has finished.

Small Details, Big Difference

  • It ends by itself: You never have to remember to put it out. The stick burns down on the mat and stops, which makes it the one piece of incense you will happily light on a Tuesday morning.
  • Nothing else required: You don't need a lighter, a holder, or a burner of any kind. The box strikes it and the mat catches it, and that is the entire apparatus.
  • The day arranges itself: You find yourself reaching for Sea before work and Forest after supper without ever having decided to. Three scents become a routine faster than you would expect.
