Description

The Blackwing Matte is the softest pencil Blackwing makes, and it has never pretended otherwise. Its graphite gives up a deep, velvety black at the lightest touch, which is why illustrators, composers and anyone who likes their thinking to show clearly on the page have kept it close for decades. This is the original black Blackwing, the pencil many people still call simply the Palomino Blackwing.

The barrel has a soft matte coating that holds your fingers rather than letting them slide, finished with a gold ferrule and a black eraser. Shading builds quickly and blends easily. It does need sharpening more often than its firmer siblings; that is the price of a line this dark, and one well worth paying.

Why You'll Love It

  • Rich Tone at a Whisper: You get a deep black line with almost no pressure, so shading, lettering and quick sketches come together faster than you expect.
  • A Grip That Stays Put: The matte barrel never slips in a warm hand, even after an hour of drawing.
  • Corrections Without Fuss: The black eraser lifts soft graphite cleanly, and you extend it from the ferrule as it wears instead of giving up on the pencil.
