Ystudio Classic Renaissance YAKIHAKU Rollerball Pen

By ystudio
$406.00 $478.00

Extraordinary craftsmanship with 'Flat foil'

YSTUDIO collaborates with Rakugei, a traditional foil art workshop in Japan, to create another unique piece.

Two rollerball pen designs form part of this beautifully unique series: the Heritage edition and the Reborn edition.

In developing this unique collection, the ancient Unryūhaku silver-foil technique was used. This technique was first discovered in a Japanese city called Kanazawa by the founder of Rakugei (and grandfather of Kohei Murata) before the Second World War.

Since the original Unryūhaku technique has scarcely been documented, the Murata family has been devoted to reviving this mysterious silver foil since the post-war period. Around half a century ago, they successfully created their version of Unryūhaku which YSTUDIO has creatively used in the making of these beautiful pens.

Each edition has its unique beauty: Heritage deep and dark in tone, intensifying the glittering vein-like pattern of aged foil while Reborn reveals a subtle pale gold lustre as if joyfully celebrating the revitalised tradition of Unryūhaku. To own this pen is an opportunity to own something very unique; a piece of art made using a technique, almost lost to the pages of history and steeped in centuries of rich culture snd heritage.

Each pen is presented in a beautiful deep wooden gift box, complete with a black sturdy, card outer-sleeve to match the design of the body and an informational booklet, contained within.

The artist behind the design
Mr. Kohei Murata, the owner of Rakugei and the third generation successor of his family-owned foil technique, learned the flat foil technique form his father while still a university student. Since then, Mr. Murata has won many awards in his traditional craftsmanship.
