While mechanical pencils may have some advantages over traditional wooden pencils, they still suffer lead breakages and loss of sharpness of the mechanical pencil's lead point. Enter Uni's rather ingenious Kuru Toga mechanical pencil. The novel 'Kuru Toga engine' mechanism inside the pencil rotates the lead so that no one side becomes overused and flattened out, thus avoiding the problem of the lead losing its sharpness. The result is a constantly sharp, cone shaped tip which is resistant to breakage and is always sharp, allowing for cleaner and more precise strokes.

How does it work? Uni's Kuru Toga self sharpening pencil feature an automatic core rotation mechanism (the 'Kuru Toga engine'). Inside the Uni Kuru Toga's mechanism are there gears; the middle gear rotates the pencil lead approximately 9 degrees when it is touched to paper. It takes around 40 rotations to completely rotate the lead on this model.

This particular variant of the Kuru Toga - the Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5mm - is a higher end version of the Kuru Toga, with a knurled aluminium grip section with a small window which reveals an orange cylinder with logo marking on it. The grip is metal, causing the pencil to be slightly more weighted at the front; it has a nice feel. As for the window, every time you put the lead tip to paper, you trigger the mechanism, causing the logo to rotate and demonstrating the rotation action taking place. The rotating logo a nice touch and also it allows you to show off the mechanism to doubters!

You can use any type of lead with the Kuru Toga. The pencil comes prefilled with HB Uni Nano Dia Lead, which we also sell separately at TJS (try it - it's superb). Measures 148mm length, approximately 10mm diameter and 15g weight. Integrated refillable capped eraser.

Available in either silver or black (with a black grip and dark grey barrel).
