  1. Midori A5 Colour Notebooks

    by M Willingham on 29 Sep 2015

I was looking for A5 notebooks which are Fountain Pen friendly from a UK source. I use APICA which I import from Australia which cost £1:82 each plus postage which still makes it worthwhile to do so. The Midori at £2:95 could have replaced the APICA. They are well produced as could be expected with the Midori name, the colours are subtle and the covers are elegant with a smooth writing surface to the pages. The pages are stapled together.
By comparison the Apica I am afraid leaves the Midori way behind. The cover is equally as elegant but much more substantial in a thicker card with a reinforced tape down the spine. Another plus is that the pages are sewn in the full length of the spine, all essential if they are to be used for journaling using the Midori system of elasticated attachment. No tearing will occur. The pages are smooth and excellent to write on with any medium.
I used thee different pens with three different inks and nib sizes to test the Midori's for fountain pen use. All wrote beautifully on the page, however, one of the samples showed bleed through on the other side of the page.
To summarise, the APICA wins easily on appearance and quality of construction and fountain pen journaling use. On price and value for money it wins even though I have to import them from Australia. The Midori with its failings however, is not a bad option for Pencil and Biro/Rollerball usage even at £2:95 each, and should find a ready market in this niche area.
Come on you lovely people at The Journal Shop do us and yourselves a favour and try sourcing Apica in all of its sizes !
