Space Pen

The Fisher Space Pen is a functional design classic - and a legendary pen too! Normal ballpoint pens will not work in space due to the weak gravity (have you tried using your ballpoint to do the crossword while laying down facing up?), so a solution was needed to enable astronauts to take notes in space. The original Space Pen cost an astronomical amount to develop (excuse the pun) and solved the problem neatly, using pressurised ink cartridges to ensure a consistent flow of ink to the tip.

Nowadays, the Space Pen is used less in space and more here on earth, although it is still an essential item on all manned space flights, both American and Russian. The Space Pen has also changed a bit since its inception - there are now a range of colours and finishes to choose from, as well as a wide range of ink colours.
